Originally created from the raw hide of animals like sharks or stingrays, shagreen has long symbolised luxury. The material was widely used during the art deco period by modernist decorators who applied stingray skin to their furniture and lighting collections. While honouring this traditional technique, we have discovered a way to mimic the organic pebbly texture of raw hides, without sacrificing our precious marine life.
Our faux shagreen pieces are crafted using moulds to produce a high-quality resin material which closely imitates natural hides. The tactile material is laminated onto the furniture using the same method as real shagreen, then hand-painted and finished to add colour, depth and variation.
