Freeform
The vision for Freeform was to create the clients’ dream home, a place that reflected how they wanted to live, both now and in the years ahead.
Jayson Pate considered each room and space with that long-term perspective, ensuring the home could evolve as needs changed. Ultimately, it was designed to tell the owners’ story, with room for the next chapter.
The kitchen is absolutely breathtaking and feels like the heart of the home. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the design and material palette?
The kitchen was designed to take pride of place on the ground floor, becoming a natural gathering point within the home. We introduced soft curves to the island and worked with the shape of the site to create a breakfast nook with its own distinct character.
Amber from Evoque Interiors did an incredible job with the material and colour palette, pairing warm timbers with the beautiful natural stone benchtop. Plush bench seating in the breakfast nook and striking pendant lighting brought warmth and softness to the space.

The Frankie Counter Stool is my favourite. They sit beautifully within this kitchen, with metal frames that complement the surrounding finishes. For me, their quality and comfort are hard to beat.
Were there any standout materials, finishes or details that became defining moments within the project?
Externally, MJB Rendering achieved one of the most impressive Rockcote render finishes I’ve seen. Paired with the Modinex LU Selekta timber-look aluminium cladding, it gives the exterior its defining character.
Inside, the CDK Stone island benchtop is a standout, the colours within the stone are extraordinary. The Venetian plaster finish on the staircase is another favourite, bringing a beautiful softness to its sculptural form.
Looking back, is there a favourite space or design detail that best captures the essence of the home?
The sweeping organic forms and exterior material palette set the tone for everything that follows, capturing the warmth, softness and sense of luxury that carry through the home.

Throughout the home there's a beautiful balance between warmth, luxury and restraint. How did you achieve that feeling?
Much of the credit belongs to Amber from Evoque Interiors. She did an incredible job of balancing the bold colours in the stone with the warmth of timber veneers and the soft texture of Venetian plaster walls. Those materials work beautifully together, giving the home a sense of luxury without overwhelming the spaces. It feels calm and inviting, while still having moments of boldness and surprise.
Your projects always feel incredibly considered and timeless. How would you describe your design philosophy?
My approach is contemporary, with a focus on creating homes that will feel just as relevant in years to come. I’m drawn to a mix of materials that brings warmth, texture and depth to a space.

What do you believe clients are looking for in luxury residential design today, and how has that evolved over recent years?
I think clients are increasingly looking to create a private sanctuary, a home that brings a sense of retreat to everyday life. Luxury has become more personal, with greater emphasis on spaces that support wellbeing, recreation and relaxation. Home gyms, dedicated wellness spaces, golf simulators and fully equipped media rooms are now high on many clients’ wish lists, reflecting a desire to enjoy more of those experiences at home.
How do you balance creating homes that feel visually striking while remaining comfortable and highly liveable?
I’ve always believed that the most important element of a home is its liveability. We spend the most time resolving the flow, function and proportions of each space before considering the aesthetics. Every site is different, so getting the planning right is fundamental. Once that foundation is in place, the visual expression comes naturally, creating a home that looks beautiful and feels effortless to live in.

What role do you think furniture plays in completing the architectural vision of a home?
Furniture plays a major role in bringing the architectural vision together. The pieces need to work with the surrounding materials and finishes, as well as with one another. When those selections are right, they create a sense of cohesion and bring warmth, character and comfort to the home.
Boyd Blue pieces feature throughout this project. What made them the right fit for this home?
Boyd Blue’s high quality pieces compliment the architecture harmoniously and speak the same sophisticated language. The quality and sophistication of Boyd Blue’s pieces made them a natural fit for this home.
