Question 1 - One minute you’re working on the road keeping in touch with clients, the next you’re on a plane visiting your factories developing new products and discovering materials for upcoming collections. How has Boyd Blue evolved since you founded it?
Over time I have dedicated myself to refining our suppliers and focusing on working with amazing family businesses that share my passion of recycled natural materials. As we have grown I have been able to be more selective in choosing the suppliers we are working with that share a similar vison and core values. We have evolved from predominately an agent for local brands to a focus on in house and international brands resulting in a unique product mix for our clients and a more holistic offering. I am extremely proud of our four stunning showrooms situated throughout Australia and I strongly believe that these spaces combined with our exceptional customer service is our greatest point of difference. My love for the juxtaposition between handmade imperfect products from India to refined handmade products from the Philippines truly defines Boyd Blue.
Question 2 - It’s incredibly clear that travel is a strong driving force for Boyd Blue, why is travel important to you and where is your favourite destination?
I regularly travel to countries that are less fortunate, however you are always welcomed with love, the happiness throughout these places is contagious and you can’t help but feel happy and grateful to be able to have these wonderful experiences.
I love Fiji as a holiday destination, it’s the only place where I can unwind and truly relax.
Question 3 - Talk us through a day in the life of Shelley Boyd?
A day in the life of Shelley Boyd… I’m not always home, so a daily routine isn’t something I have. I spend 6 months of the year traveling and the remaining time I split between our 4 showrooms and Head Office. However, every morning I try to start my day off with 10k steps, I try to squeeze in a hint of yoga and spend quality time with my two gorgeous British Blue Pussy cats; Hugo and Miss Daisy. I have a love of beautiful natural fibres and textiles, I only wear natural fibres, either silk, linen, wool, cashmere or cotton.
Question 4 - As Boyd Blue’s founder and creative director would you say you have a distinct design style? Or do you have a distinct driving force that helps you develop your collections?
I have never followed trends, I love working with Artisans in particular I love working with family business’s and their amazing skills that have been passed down through the generations. Working creatively and developing awareness around natural and often recycled materials is primarily my driving force. I am inspired by the beauty of nature, the amazing materials we get to work with like agate, marble, fossilised timbers, bone, horn, feathers, leather, linen and grass weave papers.
Question 5 - What are you most excited about for 2019?
Everything! We have so much planned for 2019 which I can’t wait to share with you all. Our new art and rugs are very special, working with my talented team who are like family to me is always inspiring.
Question 6 - No doubt this will be an incredibly hard question, but please tell us your favourite piece from Boyd Blues current collection and why?
Definitely a tough question, I absolutely adore our new Art collection, our new glass is very special, I love our Clifton range with the laminated grass weave, the Archer Bench with the woven leather is one of my new favourites, the Centurion Mirror is an oldie but a goodie. Lastly, I love the uniqueness of the Conway Cabinet. I can’t pick a single favourite!
