BOYD BLUE news

What is Petrified Wood?

Petrified wood is the name given to ancient wood that has been transformed into stone (fossilized) through the process of permineralization.

All the organic matters found in the wood are replaced by minerals, silicate minerals are the main contributing factor to this process.  Silicate minerals are rock- forming minerals with predominantly silicate anions. Fun fact- they are the largest most important class of rock-forming minerals and make up approximately 90 percent of the earth’s crust. This powerful mineral is the reason why petrified wood continues to develop with eye catching tree rings.  For the process to work successfully the wood needs to be buried in an environment both low in oxygen (preventing decomposition) and with flowing mineral laden water.

It has been said that Petrified wood is a favourite amongst metaphysicians for its good vibes and physical benefits. It’s named a “worry stone” that helps us to not sweat the small stuff.

Keep your eyes peeled for some beautiful new pieces that are lovingly created using petrified wood.
